Where the money is going The handful of changes to the acting mayor’s proposal include a $437,500 allocation for the Alaska Black Caucus to acquire an office space to provide services to Black, Indigenous and people of color who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic. The Assembly also provided extra funds for a South Anchorage food pantry. Another change diverted some funds to Covenant House Alaska for emergency rapid rehousing of homeless youths, among other changes. A large chunk of the package, about $21.5 million, will replenish several existing city programs. Most provide direct economic relief, such as grants to small businesses and nonprofits. City officials say the money will allow those programs to clear their waitlists.
Rivera reelected acting Anchorage Assembly chair following discussion over breakdown of meeting decorum
Print article The Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday night reelected Felix Rivera as acting chair and John Weddleton as acting vice chair. The vote came after members aired grievances and addressed growing tension over the last year among them, which last week culminated in a charged moment between Rivera and Jamie Allard. Municipal code requires that the Assembly select a chair and vice chair annually, by the third Tuesday following the election, and the city clerk conducted the vote by secret ballot. The Assembly also certified the results of the April 6 election at Tuesday’s special meeting.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) The Anchorage Assembly has extended into June a local COVID-19 emergency declaration, approving a shorter extension than Acting Mayor Austin Quinn-Davidson requested, with some Assembly members indicating this latest extension, the city s eighth, could be the last.
The Assembly voted 6-4 Tuesday to extend the declaration, first enacted in March 2020, to June 11. Without the extension, emergency orders including a mask mandate would have expired, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Quinn-Davidson had asked that the emergency declaration be extended into mid-July.
The Assembly also called for regular reports from the mayor’s administration on efforts to transition from emergency operations to normal operations.
