Fire department responds to 2 fires Monday

Green River Star -   July 15, 2021 Monday was a busy day for the Green River Fire Department. Firefighters dealt with two fires that day, which includes one in Jamestown. The fires are under investigation. According to a media release from the city, a grass fire took place behind Living Hope Church. Assistant Fire Chief Larry Erdmann said the fire was extinguished by 12:30 p.m. and was limited to a small area. The department was dispatched to a second fire at 11:24 p.m. to an address on Johnson Street in Jamestown. GREEN RIVER The cause of a house fire on Sunset Drive in Green River last night is still under investigation, according to the Green River Fire Department. According to a social media post from the GRFD, at around 6:20 p.m. on May 5, the department was dispatched to a structure fire at 372 Sunset Drive. At the time the call came in, no one was home and no injuries have been reported. At 10 p.m. crews were still working on the scene. GRFD Assistant Chief Bill Robinson said they had three engines on scene with approximately 20 firefighters fighting the blaze, the post states. Surrounding structures were saved and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Groups Unite to Provide Free Smoke Alarms

SWEETWATER COUNTY In an effort to reduce home fire-related injuries and deaths, the American Red Cross has teamed up with local fire departments to provide free smoke alarms and inspections. Through May 8, Sweetwater County residents can sign up for a smoke alarm installation appointments, Elizabeth Cave from the American Red Cross said. “This year, we are working with Sweetwater Fire departments to do the installations,” Cave said. “When a person signs up for the program, they will be contacted by the Red Cross for an educational session on how to prevent home fires and create a home fire escape plan.”

GR Council Members Honored for Years of Service

GREEN RIVER The Green River City Council honored two former Council members at this week’s Tuesday Council meeting. Green River Mayor Pete Rust presented plaques to former members Lisa Maes and Tom Murphy. Maes served three terms for a total of 12 years, representing Ward II, while Murphy served one term, four years, representing Ward I. Mayor Rust thanked both for their many years of dedicated service to the city. Maes, a former employee in the Parks and Recreation Department, currently works at Harley Davidson.
