EU Border Agency Frontex Leaving Hungary Due to Rule of Law Violations
Frontex, the European Union’s official border agency, announced on Wednesday that it is suspending its joint operations along the Hungarian border. Its reasoning is that Hungary is violating current rule of law norms, which the European Court of Justice has declared unlawful.
Chris Borowski, Frontex’s spokesman, confirmed that the agency will not return until Hungary fully complies with the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union with regards to the treatment of asylum applicants, reports MTI.
In its decision, the court stated that Hungary has failed to follow the EU “procedures for granting international protection and returning illegally staying third-country nationals.”
Hungary’s migration policy and border protection measures have been successful in protecting the country and ensuring the safety of its people, the prime minister’s chief domestic security advisor said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference at the Kelebia border crossing on the Serbian-Hungarian border, György Bakondi noted that the Hungarian authorities apprehended 45,500 illegal migrants at the border last year and launched criminal proceedings against 455 people smugglers, a significant increase from the previous three years.
So far this year, a total of 56 people smugglers have been arrested, Bakondi said, noting that the migration pressure on Hungary seen over the past year was now getting even more intense.
PM Advisor Praises Work of Border Authorities
György Bakondi, the prime minister’s chief domestic security advisor, has praised the work of the soldiers and police officers deployed at Hungary’s southern border, saying they had performed their duty during the year “with honour”.
“The soldiers and police serving at the border have fulfilled their duties this year in accordance with the law,” Bakondi told a press conference on Wednesday.
Hungary’s technical and legal border protection measures have proven effective, Bakondi said. He added that the border authorities will also be on duty during the holidays.
