Prime Ninister Narendra Modi on Thursday extolled the pivotal role played by Visva- Bharati in India s freedom movement and furthering the cause of universal brotherhood.
Addressing the centenary celebrations of the university founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Modi said the literary legend s vision was also the essence of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative launched by his government for the making of a self-reliant India.

Addressing the centenary celebrations of the university founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Modi said the literary legend s vision was also the essence of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative launched by his government for the making of a self-reliant India. Visva-Bharati is a venerable source of constant energy to the country, he said.
He said Tagore and the institution he founded not only strengthened the spirit of nationalism but also promoted inclusiveness that strengthened vishva bandhutva (universital brotherhood).
SANTINIKETAN: Rabindranath Tagore’s vision for Visva-Bharati was based on the concept of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, PM Narendra Modi said on Thursday at virtual meet to celebrate the university’s centenary, seeking to find commonality between his own pitch for “atmanirbharata” and Tagore’s dream of a self-reliant India.
Tagore’s idea of nationalism was also about cultural plurality and not isolationism, Modi reminded the audience, extolling Bengal’s sacrifice for India’s freedom and self-respect and alluding to the poet’s Gujarat connect.
“Our development is not in isolation. Gurudev, too, spoke of self-empowerment. Gurudev’s nationalism is evident in the manner in which he integrated India’s cultures, its practices to give shape to Visva-Bharati. And, in doing this, he also gave impetus to global friendship,” the PM said.

New Delhi, Dec 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the centenary celebrations of the Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan via video conferencing.
The Prime Minister said that various movements, which lasted for a period of 100s of years had become a unique example of sacrifice, penance and tarpan. Impressed by these moments, thousands of people to sacrifice in the freedom struggle.

The educational institutions have gave new energy, direction and height to the ideological movement to India s independence, the PM also said. He also added that India is the only major country which is moving in the right direction to achieve the targets of the Paris Agreement.

Addressing a function to mark the centenary celebrations of Visva-Bharati, the country s oldest Central University, he extolled the pivotal role it played in India s freedom movement and in furthering the cause of universal brotherhood.
Visva-Bharati was declared a Central University and an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 1951.
