The study was conducted by University of Chicago, the University of Birmingham, and Bournemouth University researchers. The research was published in Experimental Brain Research. The transatlantic collaboration emerged from ongoing research with two unique individuals — Kim, based in the U.S., and Ian, based in the U.K. While most people who participate in research studies are referred to by their initials, Kim and Ian have agreed to be identified by their first names. Their last names are not being used to protect their privacy.

Also, women have the highest risk of dying and they are nine times more likely to die after a cardiac arrest in hospital, according to research published in the European Heart Journal. The study from Sweden included 1946 people who suffered a cardiac arrest out of hospital (OHCA) and 1080 who suffered one in hospital (IHCA) between 1 January and 20 July. During the pandemic phase of the study, COVID-19 was involved in at least 10% of all OHCAs and 16% of IHCAs.
