Covid-19 missteps could make Philippines into Asia's laggard

MANILA (BLOOMBERG) - Snaking queues at Manila food banks have become a common sight as the economy continues struggling a year after the Philippines first coronavirus lockdown. It s a sharp contrast to 2018, when hundreds lined up for the grand opening of Uniqlo s Global Flagship Store in Manila, its largest outlet in South-east Asia. Over the last decade the Philippines had managed to throw off its mantle as the sick man of Asia, with its 109-million strong population driving a consumption-led economy. An outsourcing boom and remittances from legions of citizens working abroad helped raise incomes and lifted at least 2 million Filipinos out of poverty.

Analyst predicts big pot sales over Memorial Day weekend – BizWest

DENVER BDS Analytics Inc., a Boulder-based cannabis market intelligence and research company, is predicting a major boost in cannabis sales over the Memorial Day weekend when the unofficial start of summer coincides with a rollback of COVID-19 restrictions.  Fridays are typically one of the busiest for retail pot shops, a phenomenon that’s likely to be exacerbated by the upcoming three-day weekend, according to BDSA. The Friday before Memorial Day weekend has been the year’s best for sales in the past. “The return to ‘normal’ drives BDSA’s prediction that 2021 [Memorial Day Weekend] sales will be unprecedented,” according to a short fact and predictions document sent to subscribers.
