CAROLINA BEACH The Carolina Beach Mural Project is set to unveil work at its fourth location, SeaWitch Café and Tiki Bar, on Apr. 12, 6 p.m. North Carolina-based artist Sharon Dowell’s graphic illustration will honor the island’s love for beach music.
Dowell was chosen among 11 artists who applied for consideration over the winter. The focus of the mural is Carolina Beach as a destination for beach music from as early as the 1940s. Known to always attract shag dancers, the area also hosts the annual Beach Music Festival. Dowell said she was surprised to learn during her research there is a difference between shag (based in rhythm and blues) and beach music (which tends to be more pop-oriented).

By MLF Communications Staff Major League Fishing will visit Raleigh, N.C. this week for its 2nd annual Heavy Hitters event. Hosted by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, the tournament will showcase 40 anglers who qualified from the 2020 Bass Pro Tour season competing for more than $535,000, with a top prize of $100,000 going to the winner of the event and big-bass bonuses during the competition with payouts of $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000 being awarded for the single biggest fish in the Qualifying, Knockout and Championship rounds, respectively.
The body of Charles Vandiford was found around 3 p.m. Friday in the Neuse River in shallow water near Camelot Drive in James City. Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said there was no sign of foul play.
One shoe was found yesterday morning off BridgePoine Hotel and Marina near the Cunninghamd Drawbridge and IDed by the family.
Searchers from several first response groups had been on the water for parts of three days, while the North Carolina Highway Patrol and NC Wildlife assisted from the air. On the last day seven boats from the Sheriff s office, New Bern Fire Department, Vanceboro Rescue Squad, Tri Community, NC Wildlife and Cherry Point assisted. Sheriff Chip Hughes and Assistant Emergency Services Director Ira Whitford oversaw the operation.
