Book looks at Carolina Beach in the 70s, when it was Craziest Beach

Lynn R. Welborn grew up on Carolina Beach in the 1970s and by all accounts, including his, had a terrific time. Welborn began chronicling those adventures a few years ago in Crazy Beach, which probably qualifies as a roman a clef, a fancy literary term meaning that it s based on a true story but the names have been changed to protect the guilty. He had so much fun that Crazy Beach has now extended into three volumes. Well, not volumes exactly. Welborn is a child of the golden age of the Rock Era. As a pre-teen, he and a buddy actually stowed away on a van to Woodstock THE Woodstock. (He has documentary evidence.) In those days, boys and girls, you didn t download your music; it came in 33 1/3 vinyl discs.

Carolina Beach Color: Mural project unveils Record Weekend tonight at SeaWitch

“Record Weekend” by Sharon Dowell will be unveiled at 6 p.m. at SeaWitch Cafe and Tiki Bar as part of the Carolina Beach Mural Project. (Port City Daily/Courtesy of Sharon Dowell) CAROLINA BEACH  The Carolina Beach Mural Project is set to unveil work at its fourth location, SeaWitch Café and Tiki Bar, on Apr. 12, 6 p.m. North Carolina-based artist Sharon Dowell’s graphic illustration will honor the island’s love for beach music. Dowell was chosen among 11 artists who applied for consideration over the winter. The focus of the mural is Carolina Beach as a destination for beach music from as early as the 1940s. Known to always attract shag dancers, the area also hosts the annual Beach Music Festival. Dowell said she was surprised to learn during her research there is a difference between shag (based in rhythm and blues) and beach music (which tends to be more pop-oriented).
