NANAIMO The next step of B.C.’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout program is taking place.
Twelve pharmacies in the Nanaimo and Oceanside region are beginning to offer doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to people aged 55 to 65.
Availability of appointments at each pharmacy is dependant on vaccine supply and will be only for people receiving their first dose of vaccine.
Pharmacies are requesting patients book their appointment online, rather than calling.

NanaimoNewsNOW a weapon went off in a home on Groveland Dr. around 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 3 and hit someone inside the home.
He said the person who fired the weapon was in the midst of a mental health crisis at the time. The person left the home after firing the weapon.
They were quickly apprehended by police without incident and taken into custody.
The person who was hit was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.
PARKSVILLE Oceanside RCMP are seeking the public’s help in identifying two people inside a stolen vehicle involved in a weekend crash.
Police were called to the scene, north of Qualicum Beach on Hwy. 19 near Horne Lake Rd. around 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 14.
Witnesses said the vehicle with a man and woman inside crossed the centre median of the Inland Island Hwy, lost control and rolled into the southbound lane. The two allegedly left and appeared injured.
A loaded gun was found by police inside the vehicle. Officers said the firearm was reported stolen in Comox a few days prior.
There have been 424,517 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in B.C., with appointment bookings opening for people 80 and older by the end of the week.
The vaccines are “helping break the chains of transmission in our communities where we continue to see outbreaks and spread,” Henry said.
Tuesday marked the 26th consecutive extension of B.C.’s state of emergency, which allows health and emergency officials to use extraordinary powers to support the province’s pandemic response.
The Public Safety Ministry said in a statement that more than 220 violation tickets and fines of $2,300 each have been issued to owners or organizers whose behaviour contravened health orders on gatherings and events.
