Brewster School Committee race grows tense

In a typical school committee election, Heather Sprague might put out a lawn sign supporting her candidate, but in terms of advocacy, that’s as involved as she would get. Ahead of Tuesday s election, though, the Brewster mom has been reaching out privately to talk to friends about one candidate she thinks is taking pains to avoid talking to voters about her beliefs. That candidate is Rheanna Hastings, who is running against Sarah Sherman for the town’s only contested school committee seat. Sprague, who identified herself as a Democrat, says Hastings has tried to obscure her connections with right-wing political groups and her motives for running.

Cape Cod restaurants: Apt Cape Cod open year round in Brewster

When the coffee shop s owner decided to retire the following year, Regina and Brandi found themselves, unexpectedly, taking over the breakfast and lunch service for which the coffee shop had been known. There were customers who wanted breakfast, Brandi says, and it just didn t make sense to turn away customers who were already turning up. Not only did the 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. service add to Apt s business, the owners say, but it filled a need. Being responsive to Brewster s year-round community has been a priority, Regina and Brandi say, whether that involves referring diners to other Brewster restaurants when Apt is full or dropping off dinner as the restaurant owners did recently when surgery kept a couple of Apt regulars at home.

YOUR TURN: Investing in Cape Cod includes investing in housing

By Alisa Magnotta Brewster, Eastham, Orleans and Wellfleet residents voted in favor of a $131.8 million Nauset Regional High School building project. Voters also gave the go-ahead a few years ago to build a new Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich for $128 million. Bourne recently built a new $40 million intermediate school to replace an aging one. In addition to the bricks and mortar, taxpayers pay the annual operating costs to educate the students. In the Nauset district, we pay approximately $20,000 per year to educate one student. That is a whopping $260,000 investment per child for kindergarten through high school graduation.
