400 years ago, Pilgrims and Wampanoag made peace in Plymouth

Wicked Local On a warm day in the spring of 1621, English settlers at the new Plymouth Colony were scurrying about their village – such as it was, given that they only a few houses had been built – simply trying to survive. The winter had not been kind to the Saints, as they called themselves (the term Pilgrims would not be associated with the Plymouth settlers for another two centuries). Half of the original 102 immigrants died from illness and exposure during that bitterly cold, snow-driven season. Now, with the weather warming, the survivors were faced with the difficult task of living despite dwindling supplies, being cut off from their homeland and an uncertain future with local tribes.

Cape Cod Shipwrecks: Stories of Tragedy and Triumph don wilding

Wicked Local EASTHAM Cape Cod’s Outer Beach has always been known for its shipwrecks. Between 1626 and the mid-20th century, this solitary 40-mile stretch of what is now the outer beach of the Cape Cod National Seashore saw the demise of more than 3,000 vessels. It’s been said that if all the wrecks were raised, one could walk from Provincetown to Chatham without getting his or her feet wet. Since 2015, Don Wilding has been writing the popular “Shore Lore” column for The Cape Codder, often focusing on maritime tragedies. He has now compiled some of those columns and more research for his third book, “Cape Cod Shipwrecks: Stories of Tragedy and Triumph.”

5 long walks on Cape Cod

A long walk on Cape Cod can cure many ills. Of course, I m not a doctor just a guy who likes an invigorating leg-stretcher! And while there are plenty of great smaller hikes on Cape Cod, you ve got to search a bit harder for the epic rambles that get the heart pumping and the spirit soaring. Here are some of the biggies! Miles of wide trails run through the woods, then spill out into the fields of adjoining Peterson Farm, making for a nice mix of hiking experiences. There are also a few big glacial erratic boulders sprinkled about and don t miss the lovely pond, known as the Punch Bowl. The Peterson Farm section is also a popular spot for birdwatchers.

Cape Cod s Seal Problem - On The Water

Photo Credit: Wayne Davis, oceanaerials.com “I grew up fishing the Cape and I’ve watched the seal population grow over the years and completely decimate surf fishing on the back beaches from Race Point to Nauset,” said Matt Perachio of Tighten Up Charters out of Provincetown. “Nobody’s fishing off those beaches anymore.” “Ten years ago, we never saw seals, but now they’re everywhere,” said Willy Hatch, who’s been fishing the Cape and Islands for over 25 years as the captain of Machaca Charters in Falmouth. “They’re at Squibnocket Beach, Vineyard Sound, the Elizabeth Islands, Woods Hole, the Muskeget Channel. Often, the seals hear me anchor up and set up behind my boat. If I manage to hook a fish, a seal takes it right off my line. It gets worse every year as their population increases and their range expands.”
