Director of Policy Development and Education Appointed

Director of Policy Development and Education Appointed April 15, 2021 - 1:00 PM Veteran prosecutor Susan MacKay has been appointed director of policy development and education at the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service (PPS), a new position that will serve to enhance the organization’s infrastructure and operations. “Crown attorneys are responsible for making a multitude of decisions which impact the lives of all Nova Scotians,” says Martin Herschorn, director of Public Prosecutions. “Policies, together with education, are how standards for these decisions are communicated to Crown attorneys. As laws change and new types of crime emerge, there is an ongoing need to develop and change policies and to continually educate Crown attorneys. This position is critical to ensuring the PPS retains its leading edge in the exercise of prosecutorial discretion, and I’m pleased someone with Ms. MacKay’s skills will fill this new role.”

Draft Forest Management Guide Open for Public Consultation January 20, 2021 - 2:09 PM The province continues to make progress implementing the triad model of ecological forestry on Nova Scotia’s Crown lands. Public consultations have opened on a draft forest management guide, now titled the Silvicultural Guide for the Ecological Matrix. Once finalized and implemented, this technical guide will outline allowable silviculture and timber harvest methods within matrix zones on Crown land. “The adoption of ecological forestry represents an unprecedented shift in how we manage our Crown land forests, and we’re taking the time to involve the sector and other Nova Scotians,” said Derek Mombourquette, Minister of Lands and Forestry. “While finalizing a new guide is a key step in this process, it is designed to work with the other two legs of the triad model, which are also in development.”

Posted: Dec 21, 2020 9:36 AM AT | Last Updated: December 21, 2020 Nova Scotia Crown prosecutors will ask the Supreme Court of Canada to reinstate a sexual assault charge against a man from Hillsburn, Annapolis County.(Patrick Morrell/CBC) Nova Scotia Crown prosecutors will ask the Supreme Court of Canada to reinstate a sexual assault charge that was stayed because the case took too long to complete. The charge against 34-year-old Jordan Michael Ellis of Hillsburn, Annapolis County relates to an incident on April 21, 2017. A woman says says Ellis raped her when they met in person after exchanging Facebook messages and phone calls. The woman submitted to a rape kit after she lodged her complaint, but police misplaced evidence photos. The delay in finding the photos pushed the trial past the 18-month maximum the Supreme Court set for having these matters dealt with in provincial court.
