Chase Tramont, Port Orange Councilman, running for Volusia Council

PORT ORANGE   While many people are still recovering from the vitriolic 2020 election season, two local elected officials have already made decisions about 2022 races. Port Orange City Councilman Chase Tramont is running for the Volusia County Council District 2 seat that will be up for re-election next year. And Billie Wheeler, who has held that post since she took it over in January 2017, has decided not to seek re-election in 2022. Both Tramont and Wheeler went public with their decisions Friday afternoon on separate local radio talk shows. In interviews with The News-Journal earlier this week, both said they re happy with their decisions.

Daytona Beach has a new program to help low-wage earners own homes

DAYTONA BEACH  Petra Smiley s new home isn t exactly one of those tony riverfront estates with lush tropical landscaping, a backyard pool and deck for moonlit parties, and a dock to park the family yacht. Her house is a 1,250-square-foot concrete block structure built when Richard Nixon was president and located in a no-frills neighborhood just east of Nova Road near Bellevue Avenue. But to Smiley, a longtime dweller of cramped apartments, it s the castle she s been dreaming of for more than a decade. The four-bedroom home has plenty of space for her and her two small children, there s a yard complete with a huge oak tree in back, a carport will protect her from the rain, and interior upgrades give the home a modern, polished look.

He is now charged with vehicular homicide and racing on a highway, which landed him in jail on Monday (March 29th) with a $50,000 bond. Records from the Volusia County Clerk of Courts shows Cunningham was released on Tuesday (March 30th) after posting bond. Cunningham is the second to be charged in this fatal incident, the first being 18-year-old Eric Marens, who drove the car that collided with the car Greer was riding in—which was being operated by a 42-year-old Port Orange woman who survived the crash. Records also show that Cunningham was arrested March 24 on separate charges of having an opener container of alcohol in his vehicle, and DUI alcohol or drugs. Cunningham was released from jail the same day in the unrelated incident on $1,000 bail on the DUI charges. According to South Daytona Police Department traffic homicide investigators, Cunningham and Eric Lane Marens, 19, also of New Smyrna Beach, were racing south on Nova Road, reaching speeds of at least 102 mph. At the Intersection of Nova and Walton roads, Marens’ Ford Focus slammed into an Uber driver’s car, a Ford Escape, that was turning left on Walton Road to head to the Lamp Lighter Mobile Home Park, sending it 5 to 6 feet into the air. The airborne vehicle struck an electrical pole, police said.
