Columbus Boys Claim Title, Lead Area Teams at Pankoke Relays

For the first time since 2017, the Columbus Community boys enjoyed a victory lap around the track on Thursday when they won the Pankoke Relays at Winfield-Mt. Union. The Wildcats recorded 102 points on the evening to best second place New London with 96. A total of 17 Wildcats contributed to the scoring including two champions in Triston Miller with the 110m hurdles (16.98) and Mason Hodges in the discus (138’3’’). Runner-up events included 3200m run for Freddy Vergara (10:41), Kaden Amigon for long jump (19’2.5’’), and the 4x800m relay (9:32). Wildcat Head Coach Scott Dennler was ecstatic for his team to get their first crown in four years. “They took their victory lap and they were so happy. They have finished second three times, so to get over the hump and win was awesome. I was really happy for everyone especially our seniors, who have been grinding for six years. It was great to see.”

WMU Track Compete at Danville

The Winfield-Mt. Union track teams participated in a coed meet on Thursday traveling to Danville.  The boys placed third out of five teams with 86 points while Wapello won it all with 173. Dane Sweezer was the lone champ by placing first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 17.13 seconds. Brody Barton was second in the 1600m (5:05), Cam Buffington second in long jump (19’5’’), 4x800m relay second (9:46), Noah Sparrow third in 1600m (5:20), and Talon Newton third in high jump (5’10’’).  The WMU girls finished fourth with 76 points and Danville won their own meet with 197. Keetyn Townsley bested the whole field in the 100m hurdles with a time of 18.11 seconds and Jobey Malone’s heave of 35’9’’ in the shot put also ranked first. Other notable performances included Bradie Buffington second in shot (33’7.75’’), 4x100m relay second (55.58), and Malone second in the discus (97’10’’). 

Area Track Teams Compete at Dickinson Relays

The indoor track season officially kicked off this week with a few area teams traveling to Cedar Falls for the annual Dickinson Relays.  The Columbus Community boys competed in a handful of events with Kaden Amigon being the headliner. He finished 26th in the long jump with a leap of 18’11’’ and his 7.5 seconds in the 60m dash ranked 33rd. Mason Hodges placed 47th in the shot put with a heave of 36’2.25’’, Jeff Hoback 56th in long jump (16’10’’), Owen Watson 66th in shot put (32’3’’), and the 4x800m relay team placed 27th (9:33.81). Winfield-Mt. Union was also there with Brody Barton cracking the top 40 in the 1600m relay. The senior recorded a time of 5:12 and teammate Noah Sparrow was not far behind in 44th (5:21). Other top performances included Caleb Giese 57th in the 400m (1:00.04), Sparrow 62nd in 800m (2:29), and 4x400m relay in 32nd (4:04). Columbus Community was the lone girls team competing and they were led by Emma Milder placing 29th in the long
