Rocky Lombardi’s Michigan State career appears to be over.
The redshirt junior quarterback entered the transfer portal, a program spokesman confirmed on Friday afternoon. Lombardi is the fourth Spartan to enter the portal on Friday alone, joining redshirt freshman offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs, redshirt sophomore cornerback Davion Williams and redshirt sophomore linebacker Jeslord Boateng.

Add another name to Michigan State’s future quarterback competition.
Anthony Russo, a graduate transfer from Temple, announced his commitment to the Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. He will be eligible to play next season.
Russo’s commitment coincided with the opening day of the early signing period as Michigan State coach Mel Tucker lands his first recruiting class. The addition of an experienced player to the quarterback room is obviously notable as the Spartans have uncertainty at the position with redshirt junior Rocky Lombardi and redshirt freshman Payton Thorne both starting this season.

Despite the season coming to an end, there’s a lot of questions that linger about this football team and program. As Michigan State gets set to travel to Penn State for its final home game, here’s my shot at trying to answer some of the biggest question marks that surround the program.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Michigan State will have a new starting quarterback.
Redshirt junior Rocky Lombardi, who was injured last week, was not in uniform during warmups for the Spartans (2-4) before Saturday’s game (noon, ABC) at Penn State (2-5). Redshirt freshman Payton Thorne – the only other quarterback to play for Michigan State this season – took snaps from starting center Nick Samac during warmups. Redshirt sophomore Theo Day and true freshman Noah Kim were the other quarterbacks participating in warmups and it’s the first game Kim has dressed for.
