2021 - Hitting Grazing Targets in 2021 with PastureBase Ireland Webinar - Teagasc | Agriculture and Food Development Authority

On this webinar which took place on Wednesday, 7th April, John Douglas & Joseph Dunphy, Teagasc Grass10 and Micheal O Leary, PastureBase Ireland go through how you can use PastureBase Ireland to plan your spring grazing. The Grass10 and PastureBase team gave an update on Spring grass supply & grazing from PastureBase Ireland, as well as tips and advice on managing the 2 nd rotation during April. They gave an overview of the terms used on PastureBase Ireland such as Average Farm Cover, Cover per Livestock Unit, Demand and Days Ahead so you can make better grazing decisions. The panel also outlined how to set your farm up with quality grass as we transition from low to high growth rates.

PastureBase data for the week & Elodie Ruelle’s MoSt Grass Growth Prediction Model.   Grass growth improved last week, however a colder week in store with air and soil temperatures dropping. Niall Callanan from Co. Galway discusses his grazing plan as he starts his 2 nd rotation. Niall focuses on the weekly grass walk and keeping AFC and Cover/cow in line with his targets. West Cork scoops top spot in Grassland competition

Caroline O Neill Walsh, Crohane, Ballinascarthy, Co Cork. \ Donal O Leary The 2020 Grassland Farmer of the Year is Caroline Walsh from Ballinscarthy in west Cork. Caroline won the dairy award and the overall award for top performance in grassland management. She milked 72 cows in 2020 and grew 14.2tDM/ha. Originally from Ballinadee near Bandon, she is married to Joe, an agricultural contractor and they have five children. Caroline s dairy career started in 2009 when she was awarded new entrant milk quota and leased a farm to milk 40 cows. The couple converted Joe’s home farm to dairy in 2014 and Caroline’s herd was moved there in 2015.
