Weather challenges
Rainfall over the last 48 hours has been very variable depending on location. Marginal lands which were just starting to dry are back to square one and this is further delaying fertiliser applications whereas there was a good opportunity to apply fertiliser on drier lands which many producers availed of over the last week.
Grass utilisation had improved significantly but is likely to dip again. This will mean a return to practices such as supplementing ewes with lambs at foot and conserving grass supplies where there are signs of a potential deficit. With days getting longer, the situation can turn quickly but you will still need to be careful and take appropriate actions to ensure you remain in a good position.

Time is running out for firms to sign up for a free online manufacturing conference featuring Cumbrian businesses.
The full line-up for Made Smarterâs digital manufacturing conference has been revealed with Cumbrian businesses among 44 set to appear.
Billed as an event for manufacturers by manufacturers, the free-to-access virtual summit on March 10 will showcase how Cumbrian businesses can leverage and fast-track digital technology and tools for a year of recovery, growth and resilience.
Included on the billing are Keith Scobie-Youngs from Cumbria Clock Company and Ben Soper of Stead McAlpin & Company.

Lambing management will be the topic of discussion during a webinar on Thursday 4 March, starting at 7.30pm. \ Philip Doyle
On Thursday 4 March at 7.30pm, the NI Sheep Programme will hold a pre-lambing management webinar.
Hosting the event will be programme farmer James McCay.
James runs an upland and hill farm at Drumquin, Co Tyrone.
The farm averaged 300 breeding ewes in 2020, split evenly between upland and hill ground.
Nutrition and scanning results
Lambing is due to start at the end of March. Discussion will focus on pre-lambing nutrition, based on scanning results, lambing facilities on-farm and the management of lactating ewes post-turnout.

The poll attracted over 120,000 votes on the ALM website; over 7 million active online engagement during the voting period; and over 5000 votes via email.
