The controversy engulfing Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull deepened Thursday amid his latest inflammatory remarks about Muslims.
Newly released emails to constituents also show Shull believes calls for his resignation amount to “cancel culture” as he commiserates with former President Donald Trump.
He described his situation in one email exchange as “a real mess.”
Earlier Thursday, Shull tried to deflect criticism by noting during a Board of Commissioners meeting that he met with local Muslim leaders this week at their invitation after “last week’s media storm regarding comments I had made about Islam.”

Shull rejected a chorus of calls for his resignation in light of Islamophobic statements he s made on Facebook.

Embattled Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull on Thursday dug in and said he would hold onto his office, rebuffing a large chorus of community and elected leaders who have called for his immediate resignation.
At the same time Shull inexplicably voted in favor of a resolution censuring him and calling for him to step down for making “derogatory, offensive, insensitive, and racist” remarks that “damaged the reputation” of Clackamas County.

The suite of tests will provide details about the girl’s eye and skin color, her ethnicity and the geographic origin of ancestry, said Dr. Nici Vance, the state’s forensic anthropologist.
Little is known about the child, whose remains were discovered Dec. 10 near the rest area along the H.B. Van Duzer Forest State Scenic Corridor in Lincoln County. A person who had stopped by the rest area came across her remains along the muddy banks of the Salmon River.

Male inmates with severe mental illness are spending more time out of their cells, harming themselves less and say they are getting better mental health treatment than before, according to a new report by a prominent disability rights group.
In 2015, Disability Rights Oregon issued a report detailing “a hopeless and dysfunctional program” for 40 inmates with serious mental illnesses at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. The report concluded that inmates spent a vast majority of their days in their cells in a dark, stifling and foul-smelling unit.

Oregon State Police have received nearly 150 tips about the unidentified remains of a young girl found in the woods of Lincoln County, but investigators have no solid leads nearly four weeks into the case about the child’s identity or how she ended up along a muddy riverbank.
Six state police detectives and a sergeant are working full time to piece together details about the girl but much remains unknown, said Lt. Cord Wood, who is supervising the team.
