Kale Williams’ article ‘It’s just a matter of time’: Inmates detail horrid conditions amid COVID spike in Oregon prisons” (Jan. 30) has the correct headline, but I disagree with the conclusion that the Department of Corrections is at fault. As a frequent visitor to Oregon State Penitentiary Lifers Club meetings, I am in weekly contact with a number of adults in custody who have high praise for the manner in which Superintendent Colette Peters and her staff have handled this terrible epidemic.
Prisons are the worst place to stop an epidemic. One can condemn “isolation cells,” but they are the only places available to isolate inmates who test positive. My buddies at the state penitentiary have nothing but praise for the brave guards who have continued to come to work in spite of danger to their own health.
