The province’s phased plan to end COVID-19 restrictions by early July is feasible and has the support of medical advisers, Alberta’s top doctor said Thursday.
While Dr. Deena Hinshaw said larger gatherings such as the Calgary Stampede could lead to some virus transmission, she said the strategy is a safe one to bring Alberta back to normalcy this summer.

EDMONTON If COVID-19 vaccination numbers continue to go up and hospital admissions down, Alberta could be fully reopen in July. The province will reopen in three phases based on the two rates, Premier Jason Kenney announced Wednesday. The first stage will begin June 1, two weeks after Alberta marked the milestone of immunizing half of its eligible population 12 and over with at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The second part of this trigger is for Alberta to have fewer than 800 total hospitalizations. According to the latest data, there were 565 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19. So, across the province starting June 1, outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people, outdoor patio dining by members of the same household, and personal and wellness service appointments can all resume.

EDMONTON Some Edmonton businesses are giving their customers extra motivation to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Fleisch Delikatessan is entering people into a draw for a $100 gift certificate if you send images proving your vaccination. The draw will happen in June. “We wanted to do something to provide an incentive for people to get vaccinated and then also have something to look forward to, to celebrate getting vaccinated,” owner Katy Ingraham told CTV News Edmonton. “Any incentive that is encouraging people to get vaccinated and do their part is really great!” Woodshed Burgers is giving customers a free side order of fries or onion rings if you purchase a burger and you go in an after you’ve been vaccinated that day.
