Boko Haram, Fulani Jihadists Expand Reach in Nigeria

The Nigerian Islamic terror group Boko Haram and Fulani jihadists belonging to a mainly Muslim ethnic group of Nigerian cattle herders, have expanded their territory in Nigeria in recent months with increased attacks outside of their usual strongholds, local media reported Monday.
“[I]n the latest revelations by state governments, there is an indication that the [Boko Haram] terrorists now operate in other states apart from the troubled North-east,” Nigeria’s
Premium Times reported May 17.
“Most of these states such as Nasarawa, Benue and Niger do not share boundaries with the North-east states,” the newspaper noted. Niger state borders Nigeria’s centrally located national capital, Abuja, to the west, while Nasarawa borders Abuja to the east. Benue state is located 120 miles southeast of Abuja.

The Nigerian Army on Monday dismissed an allegation that it was deploying only commanders of Northern extraction to quell tension in the Southeast.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Yerima said there was no truth in the allegation.
He was reacting to an online publication entitled: “Nigerian Army shuns Southern officers, deploy Northern commanders to quell tension in Southeast.”
Gen. Yerima stated that ordinarily, the Nigerian Army would have ignored the illogical narrative by the online medium, but for the good of members of the public, it must respond.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday evening reportedly stormed a Mosque suspected to be hiding some Boko Haram adherents and arrested 10 suspects at Filin Lazio, Hotoro in Kano.
According to unconfirmed reports the mosque was said to be built by some men from Borno State who had fled the troubled Northeast due to the Boko Haram insurgency.
Reports indicates that the troops took away some unidentified items from the surroundings of the mosque.
When contacted, Captain Uba, Army spokesperson in Kano, said he had not been briefed on the development.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday evening stormed a Boko Haram suspected mosque located at Filin Lazio, Hotoro in Kano metropolis and arrested no fewer than 10 suspects.
Reports have it that the operation was conducted in a very professional manner without drawing the ire of Muslims who were just breaking their fast.
