ETRC calls for an end to ‘restrictive approach’ to travel The European Travel Retail Confederation ( ETRC) has called on governments to take a coordinated approach to ensuring travel is safely resumed in time for the summer. European Commission’s proposal for a Digital Green Passport. The passport would allow travellers to prove they have been vaccinated or received a negative test result, but they must be deployed quickly and in a co-ordinated manner. ETRC President Nigel Keal said: “Despite protocols in place to allow for safe travel, many European countries have taken a very restrictive approach when it comes to non-essential travel. We hope that the Digital Green Certificate will be part of a broader strategy for a coordinated restart of travel in Europe to provide much-needed certainty for our industry and our travellers ahead of the Summer period”.

European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC) President Nigel Keal has warned industry stakeholders that regulatory challenges facing the likes of tobacco, confectionery and alcohol have not been sidelined by legislators due to the health crisis. In an opening address at the ETRC Annual Business Forum today (20 January), Keal called for greater collaboration within industry circles to address pressing threats to the future of the DF&TR sector. “Duty free and travel retail has faced a considerable number of regulatory and political challenges. Covid has not made these threats disappear; quite the contrary, and ETRC will continue defending the channel against threats relating to product categories and the shop environment.
