Luzerne County Council declared the position of county district attorney vacant on Tuesday, after longtime District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis filed to run for a seat on the county court of common pleas.
The county charter requires council to declare a vacancy if a district attorney files a nominating petition for another office, said Councilwoman Linda McClosky Houck, who proposed a resolution to declare the seat vacant.
Council voted 6-3 to approve the resolution.
Tim McGinley, Robert Schnee, Sheila Saidman, LeeAnn McDermott, Harry Haas and Houck voted yes.
Stephen J. Urban, Walter Griffith and Kendra Radle voted no.
Chris Perry and Matthew Vough abstained. Perry said his son-in-law is an assistant district attorney, while Voughâs father is county President Judge Michael T. Vough.
WILKES-BARRE â Dozens of people in a crowd of well over 100 held up photos of the loved ones they lost to COVID-19 at a candlelight vigil Saturday on the Luzerne County Courthouse south lawn.
Kim Letizi and Trish Zimmerman, who both lost their fathers to the virus, organized the event with assistance from Luzerne County Manager David Pedri and county staff.
While planning the event, Pedri said, Letizi told him she wanted to âput a name ⦠to put a face to the victims of COVID. Too long are they just numbers. These are our community, these are our neighbors, these are our mothers, our fathers, our friends.â

Against the advice of Luzerne County’s chief solicitor, the Luzerne County Election Board’s two Republican board members on Wednesday appointed Republican county Councilman Stephen J. Urban as the new board chairman.
The third election board member Democrat Audrey Serniak loudly voted against the appointment and questioned how it came about without her knowledge. The board had traditionally sought citizen applicants and publicly interviewed them.
