Judge sends man to prison By Tim Colliver - tcolliver@aimmediamidwest.com A Texas man entered a plea of guilty to a third-degree felony charge of aggravated vehicular homicide Monday in Highland County Common Pleas Court. Daniel Martinez, 31, Crystal City, Texas received a 30-month prison sentence from Judge Rocky Coss and in so doing, court documents said that a second count of aggravated vehicular assault, a fourth-degree felony, was dismissed. His guilty plea, conviction and sentencing was in connection with an incident described in the July 2020 indictment from a Highland County grand jury. The indictment said that on Nov. 1, 2019, while “operating or participating in the operation of a motor vehicle,” described as a Chevrolet Impala, Martinez caused the death of Cody Spencer recklessly.

Nathan Murray, 32, is facing a 24-count indictment returned by a Highland County grand jury on April 6 on charges ranging from a first-degree count of rape and a third-degree felony charge of gross sexual imposition, to six counts of the second-degree felony of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to 16 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, each a fourth-degree felony.

By Tim Colliver - tcolliver@aimmediamidwest.com The spring-like temperatures of Monday and Tuesday are forecast to give way to winter cold and a chance for measurable snowfall overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. National Weather Service staff meteorologist Ashley Novak said measurable snowfall is defined as snow on the ground that measures at least one-tenth of an inch. “It looks we’re going to have one last push of winter that will start Tuesday night with the cold air moving in,” she said. “We’ll have a strong cold front that will be moving through that will bring rain and then will transition Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning into snow before changing back into a cold rain later Wednesday.”

Appraisal Day a great success Local auctioneer/appraiser Mike Ames is shown evaluating a Model 1892 Winchester repeater rifle during the Highland County Historical Society’s Spring Appraisal Day held Saturday. Society member Jean Fawley told The Times-Gazette the first-ever event was a great success, with 45 individuals bringing in various historical items and family heirlooms for appraisal, and to learn the history behind them. Fawley said another Appraisal Day is being planned for this fall and reminded everyone of the yard sale and flea market event scheduled for Saturday, May 29 at the Highland House Museum. She added that plans were also continuing for Pioneer Day, now scheduled to be held on the grounds of the Scott House in Hillsboro in August.
