Scholarship in Beloit encourages students of color to major in education

A non-profit in Beloit works to make sure school staff look a lot more like the students. Grow Your Own Scholarship Program Committee Member and McNeel Intermediate School Principal Michelle Hendrix-Nora says students of color who major in education with the intention of returning to Beloit to teach can earn up to $5000 a year for tuition. Hendrix-Nora says the program is funded through donations with a major contribution from former State Senator Tim Cullen launching the program. With lawmakers retiring, resigning or losing reelection, the Wisconsin State Assembly will see 16 new members while eight new members will serve in the state Senate in the coming two-year session that starts in January. At least 15 of those elected this cycle have already held elected office. And 14 women are among the ranks of those newly elected to the Legislature or moving from the Assembly to the Senate. Of the 16 new Assembly members, 10 are Democrats, including the two who defeated incumbent Republicans. In the Senate, three new Democrats join the ranks, all of whom have held elected office before. Republicans will welcome five new senators to the chamber; three of them have previous elected experience, including Rep. Rob Stafsholt, R-New Richmond, who defeated Sen. Patty Schachtner, D-Somerset.

Castletown Gof Links Hotel has become increasingly derelict The planning process over plans to redevelop the former Castletown Golf Links Hotel has taken an ’inordinate’ length of time, a court heard. Langness Golf Course Ltd has lodged a petition of doleance over the planning department’s failure to determine Dandara’s application for the derelict hotel. Fort Island Developments Ltd, part of the Dandara Group, submitted its multi-million pound plans for a new hotel and flats complex just over three years ago. The application (17/01265/B) is for a 4 -plus hotel with leisure and spa facilities together with 40 residential flats. Dandara says that a residential development is the only way for the commercial case for a hotel to stack up.
