LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) City Brewing Co.’s rezoning request so it can raze several vacant houses for employee parking is advancing to the La Crosse Common Council after gaining approval from a second city committee Tuesday.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The community got a chance to weigh in on the future of Fire Station No. 4 on Gillette Street.
A public hearing hosted by the Heritage Preservation Commission was held at the South Side Neighborhood Center Thursday evening.
The city originally planned to tear down the 80-year-old building and develop a new, modern station.
But in early March, the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse put together a petition, making its case for why the station should be designated as a historic site.

“It’s changing,” La Crosse resident Betty Niebuhr-Bailey said. “It’s becoming more modern.”
The building at the corner of 3rd & Cameron Streets is an original.
“The building was built in 1896,” Betty said. “It’s a beautiful building.”
Betty has family ties to this structural antique.
“Late 20s, early 30s my grandfather bought the building,” Betty said. “And then it became Niebuhr Plumbing.”
Betty says her father, oldest brother, second brother, and mother all took over the building for periods of time before it was Betty’s property.
LA CROSSE, Wis. U-Haul wants “to blend in with the city, not be against it,” a company official told participants in a virtual meeting Monday night who quizzed his plans for the vacant former Kmart building on the city’s South Side.
Up to 50 residents and city officials tuned in to the Bluffside Neighborhood Association meeting, raising concerns about the appearance, landscaping, lighting, potential traffic, and other issues if U-Haul buys the building at Losey Boulevard and State Road.
The building has been vacant since Kmart closed in 2017, and city officials, neighbors and new owners George Parke and Festival had hoped to find a buyer who would develop it into mixed-use of retail and residential with no takers.
