Vancouver Canucks trade Nate Schmidt to Winnipeg Jets for 2022 third-round draft pick
The Vancouver Canucks traded Nate Schmidt to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, the teams announced, after the defenseman reportedly blocked previous attempts to move him there.
The Jets acquired Schmidt, 30, for a 2022 third-round draft pick. The Canucks had previously acquired Schmidt from the Vegas Golden Knights in October 2020 for a 2022 third-round draft pick as well.
The trade occurs after Winnipeg sent two second-round picks to the Washington Capitals for defenseman Brenden Dillon on Monday night, ostensibly because Schmidt refused to be traded to the Jets. The Winnipeg Sun reported that the Jets made several attempts to acquire Schmidt, but that he wouldn t waive his modified no-trade clause to facilitate the deal.

WINNIPEG The Winnipeg Jets continue to bolster their defensive core thanks to a trade with the Vancouver Canucks to bring in a veteran defenceman. The Jets announced Tuesday night they have acquired Nate Schmidt from the Canucks in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. Schmidt spent just one season with Vancouver tallying 15 points in 54 games last season. Before his brief stint with the Canucks, Schmidt spent three seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights from 2017 to 2020. He set a career high in the 2017-18 season with 36 points. This comes a day after the Jets acquired defenceman Brenden Dillon from the Washington Capitals.

WINNIPEG - In this summer of bold moves, Kevin Cheveldayoff has already made his mark.
One day after bringing back veteran forward Paul Stastny on a one-year deal and acquiring defenceman Brenden Dillon in a trade, the Winnipeg Jets added another blue-liner, shipping a third round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft to the Vancouver Canucks to acquire Nate Schmidt on Tuesday night.
Schmidt had been a target of the Jets in the past, but they were previously one of the teams on his 10-team no-trade clause.
Schmidt, 30, spent less than a year with the Canucks after being traded to Vancouver by the Vegas Golden Knights in October.
The six-foot, 194-pound blue liner had 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) and four penalty minutes for the Canucks last season, well below the career-high 36 points (five goals, 31 assists) and 16 penalty minutes he registered for Vegas in 2017-18.
Schmidt hails from St. Cloud, Minn., and entered the NHL after playing at the University of Minnesota.
He signed with the Capitals as a free agent in 2013 and spent four seasons in Washington before being selected by Vegas in the 2017 expansion draft.
Winnipeg picked up another former Capitals defenceman on Monday, acquiring 30-year-old Brenden Dillon in exchange for two second-round draft picks, one in 2022 and another in 2023.
