Vancouver Canucks trade Nate Schmidt to Winnipeg Jets for 2022 third-round draft pick
The Vancouver Canucks traded Nate Schmidt to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, the teams announced, after the defenseman reportedly blocked previous attempts to move him there.
The Jets acquired Schmidt, 30, for a 2022 third-round draft pick. The Canucks had previously acquired Schmidt from the Vegas Golden Knights in October 2020 for a 2022 third-round draft pick as well.
The trade occurs after Winnipeg sent two second-round picks to the Washington Capitals for defenseman Brenden Dillon on Monday night, ostensibly because Schmidt refused to be traded to the Jets. The Winnipeg Sun reported that the Jets made several attempts to acquire Schmidt, but that he wouldn t waive his modified no-trade clause to facilitate the deal.

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets have added another veteran defenceman to the lineup, acquiring Nate Schmidt from the Vancouver Canucks.
In exchange, Vancouver receives Winnipeg s third-round pick in the 2022 NHL entry draft.
Schmidt, 30, spent less than a year with the Canucks after being traded to Vancouver by the Vegas Golden Knights in October.

Nate Schmidt has been traded, as the Vancouver Canucks have made yet another move.
The 30-year-old defenceman is off to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a third-round pick in 2022.
“We are pleased to regain a third-round pick in next year’s draft as we look to continue strengthening our prospect pool,” said Canucks GM Jim Benning. “We would like to thank Nate for his contributions to our club and we wish him and his family well.”
The move is a salary dump by the Canucks, who needed to clear cap space. Schmidt’s contract has four years left, carrying a $5.95 million cap hit.
