(File photo) Tāhunanui School principal Barbara Bowen said it was “gut-wrenching” to see the damage after getting a call from the Fire Service first thing on Saturday morning. It appeared the fire had been lit on the deck outside a classroom, causing damage to the structure underneath and melting the clear plastic panelling. “It doesn t look huge but it has probably caused around $20,000 of damage.” Bowen said the deck was part of a brand-new build which had been completed in the last few months, with students being able to use it for the first time last term.
