His candidacy laid bare significant anti-Catholic bias at that time. The idea, the concern, the worry was that, as a Catholic, he would make decisions that were not in the best interests of the American public. Instead, so the worry went, his decisions would be based on what the Pope said or what his Catholic faith required. On Sept. 12, 1960, Kennedy rebuffed these claims: “Contrary to common newspaper usage, I am not the Catholic candidate for president. I am the Democratic Party s candidate for president, who happens also to be a Catholic.”
