Lithuania has offered its assistance to Estonia, as the country is in a dire coronavirus situation, and is awaiting a response on how it could help, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said on Wednesday. We have said that we stand ready to assist, and we are now just waiting for our Estonian colleagues to indicate any specific needs we could help with, she told journalists at parliament. In her words, Lithuania would send a team of medics to Estonia but is now awaiting a response on how it could help. Simonyte also confirmed that Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis had left for Estonia.

Bank of Latvia warns budget deficit might soon become excessively large 2021-02-23 LETA/TBT Staff RIGA - The Bank of Latvia warns that Latvia s budget deficit might soon become too large.  At Tuesday s meeting of the government and the Crisis Management Council, representatives of the Finance Ministry informed about the situation with the budget program Funds for Unforeseen Events and Latvia s macroeconomic situation.  According to the Finance Ministry s forecasts, in 2021, Latvia s general government deficit will grow from the planned EUR 1.2 billion, or 3.9 percent of GDP, to an estimated EUR 2.9 billion, or 9.4 percent of GDP. Commenting on the information provided by the Finance Ministry, Edvards Kusners, an adviser to the Bank of Latvia Council, said that the projected government debt of 50 percent of GDP is acceptable but that the projected budget deficit is too large in the situation where the economy is growing.

State of emergency in Latvia to be extended until April 2021-02-03 LETA/TBT Staff RIGA - The Cabinet of Minister and the Crisis Management Council agreed today to extend the state of emergency in Latvia until April 6, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) told the press today. The state of emergency was declared on November 9, 2020, in order to curb Covid-19 spread. A number of restrictions are in force during the state of emergency. The Health Ministry proposed that the state of emergency could be lifted when Covid-19 incidence in Latvia declined three times. The Health Ministry also proposed a new Covid-19 risk management strategy, stating four epidemiological indicator groups on which the restrictions will be based. Currently Latvia is in the dark red category as the cumulative 14-day Covid-19 incidence is 561.26 cases per 100,000 residents.
