High schoolers from across Nebraska and a few pelicans descended on Lake Wanahoo on April 28 for the 29th annual Nebraska State Envirothon. Ord High School took home the championship, along with $1,500, and will represent Nebraska at the National Conservation Foundation Envirothon in July.
Envirothon is an environmental education program for high school students that combines classroom learning and outdoor activities. This year’s competition was hosted at the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District’s Lake Wanahoo near Wahoo.
“Envirothon allows students to get outdoors and learn about natural resources in a hands-on environment,” said Jim Eschliman, Nebraska Association of Resources Districts president. “The activities are designed to help students become environmentally aware, action-oriented adults, but also exposes them to many exciting career opportunities.”

Envirothon, which began in Pennsylvania in 1979, will be held in a virtual format this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The National Conservation Foundation Board of Trustees and the 2021 hosting organization, the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts, recently announced the transition to online for the 2021 NCF-Envirothon annual international competition.
Pennsylvania Envirothon Inc. last September made a similar announcement about the state competition, which annually determines the Pennsylvania team that will compete at the international level.
Pennsylvania has won the international competition in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2017, and frequently placed in the top 10 and top 3 finishers.
