One day this past winter, a Denver Public Schools (DPS) fifth grader phoned a therapist who was helping her cope with her anxiety. She missed her friends and needed to talk. A single mom a few miles south in Littleton called her teenage sons from work one weekday, just to make sure they were doing OK with everything. In northeastern Colorado, a mother couldn’t get through the day without worrying about her four children, one of whom was in middle school and recently had asked the family’s Alexa device for advice on how to put an end to his suicidal thoughts.

A program in Colorado to place children with foster families could soon be a model for other states to follow.
The Family First Prevention Services Act of 2018 will restrict the number of children going into residential care starting this year.
The team at the Tennyson Center for Children came up with a program that allows kids without a family to stay there temporarily. The goal at Tennyson is for advocates to spend 30 days finding the right foster family for that child.
Annette Falkman started as the Escalantes’ Families Together neighbor in May. When a notice seeking volunteer neighbors for Families Together popped up on her Facebook page in April, she thought it sounded perfect. “This was something that I could do, and I love doing it,” Falkman said.
