How some of our most high-profile politicians had brushes with the law

It emerged this weekend that Tánaiste Leo Varadkar is the subject of a full investigation by gardaí over his handing a confidential Government document to a friend. The case centres on Mr Varadkar’s decision to pass a confidential copy of the Government’s proposed new GP contract with the Irish Medical Organisation to his friend Maitiú Ó Tuathail, who was then the head of the rival National Association of General Practitioners, in April 2019. There have been a number of criminal investigations into high-profile politicians in Ireland, some of which resulted in prosecution and some where no charges were brought.
