Florida ranked 13th in teen risky driving survey by CoPilot

There s just days left in Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and its message is to put down the cellphone and focus. A new CoPilot survey indicates that Florida stands high on the list of states with the riskiest teenage drivers. CoPilot, an online automobile shopping research site, used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting systems. It says the risk of a fatal crash is three times higher per mile for drivers ages 16 to 19 than for those 20 and up. The three high-risk driving behaviors are: not wearing a seatbelt, drinking and driving, and texting and driving. Risks are particularly high for male drivers, those with other teenage passengers, and teens who are in the first few months after receiving their license, the report said.

Okaloosa deputies investigating shooting death of Fort Walton teen

The teen victim, identified as Quolee Jackson, had suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and was unconscious as his parents were attempting to drive him to a nearby hospital.  Deputies immediately began to render lifesaving measures until EMS arrived and transported the victim to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, OCSO reported. Jackson was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly before midnight.  With assistance from the Fort Walton Beach Police Department, OCSO deputies searched for evidence and witnesses overnight and continued their investigation into Tuesday.  Our investigators are working relentlessly, Sheriff Eric Aden said in the news release. Aden also asked that the community show compassion amid the tragic incident and come together to bring more information to light.

DeFuniak Springs, Florida woman found guilty of multiple charges in 2019 shooting

State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden announced in a Friday press release that a Walton County jury found Glenda Travaneisha Hamilton, of DeFuniak Springs, guilty of criminal mischief, aggravated battery with great bodily harm and with a firearm by discharging a firearm.  Sentencing is scheduled for June 22. Hamilton is facing up to 30 years in prison and is subject to a 25 year minimum mandatory prison sentence under Florida’s 10-20-Life law, according to the release.  The charges stem from an Oct. 16, 2019, altercation between Hamilton and two victims. The two victims, a male and a female, went to visit a friend who lived on Howling Road, west of DeFuniak Springs, but were not aware Hamilton was staying at his home.
