CIOs are garnering plaudits for digital transformations that fortify operations and generate new revenue streams. But before IT leaders can initiate a bet-the-house overhaul, many must foster a far more foundational transition: IT culture change.
Such turnarounds are essential for IT departments that have grown stagnant from long-running servitude as order takers, “too many cooks in the kitchen” syndrome, or the inexorable death march that accompanies an unwillingness to take risks.
Such scenarios require change agents who can orchestrate a fundamental transformation of the people, processes, and technology that constitute the fabric of IT. Exemplars of such changes recently shared with CIO.com their turnaround stories, as well as lessons they gleaned from their journeys in transforming IT.

FTDs CTO Powell on Transforming and the Next New Normal
One year after joining the 110-year-old company, Powell talks about the floral ecommerce retailer s revamp of its infrastructure.
With his first year under his belt as CTO of wire service and wholesaler FTD, Matt Powell is looking at more than just a post-pandemic future.
FTD weathered its share of challenges before COVID-19 struck. The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2019, which led to a restructuring with Nexus Capital Management purchasing FTD’s North American and Latin American flower delivery operations to form FTD LLC. The restructuring also saw FTD shed two of its subsidiaries, putting its focus squarely on floral delivery.
JM Smucker will lose an undisclosed number of North American employees as it continues to reshape its portfolio and corporate organization to better align with evolving consumer demands and ongoing SKU rationalization by retailers, executives confirmed this week.
