“During the lockdown I realised, for the first time, that my books are heavy.”
Sitting cross-legged on a concrete slab on Platform Number 1 in a deserted Shyamnagar Railway Station, Dipankar Kundu, 44, tells me of this and other realisations from the Covid 19-induced lockdown in March 2020. The lockdown stopped suburban trains from running between Sealdah and Ranaghat, and put an end to Kundu’s livelihood as well.
Poet, publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who helped launch the Beat movement, passes away at 101

In 2012, Ferlinghetti won the Janus Pannonius International Poetry Prize from the Hungarian PEN Club. When he learned the country s right-wing government was a sponsor, he turned the award down.
SAN FRANCISCO: Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet, publisher, bookseller and activist who helped launch the Beat movement in the 1950s and embodied its curious and rebellious spirit well into the 21st century, has died at age 101. Ferlinghetti, a San Francisco institution, died Monday at his home, his son Lorenzo Ferlinghetti said. A month shy of his 102nd birthday, Ferlinghetti died in his own room, holding the hands of his son and his son s girlfriend, as he took his last breath. The cause of death was lung disease. Ferlinghetti had received the first dose of the Covid vaccine last week, his son said Tuesday.

UNDERSTANDING SHAKESPEARE: Join us at the Troy Public Library on Thursdays, February 18th – March 18th from 6:30 – 7:30PM for our Understanding Shakespeare workshop. This will be a five-session program on how to understand Shakespeare s plays. We will start our discussion with Act 1 of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet.” Then in the following four weeks we will discuss the play one act at a time. This program will allow the participants to put the play in a variety of contexts, such as its relationship to his other works and to the modern existential world.
