Our music venues remain closed, and dancers are performing end-of-semester concerts on Zoom live from their living rooms asking us to buy tickets to support huge budget gaps. The other day, Gov. Baker rolled back openings, including museums, given the surge in COVID cases. When Signature Sounds turned 20 years old, the Valley record label and production company celebrated in style: a series of concerts, held over several days at Northampton’s Academy of Music, featuring numerous artists and bands from its roster.
For its 25th anniversary, staff at the label early this year discussed some other possibilities, such as putting together a tour of a small group of Signature artists.
“We didn’t want to do a paler version of what we’d done for the 20th anniversary,” Jim Olsen, Signature’s president, said during a recent phone call. “So we discussed a few other possibilities … the idea of a tour, though, never really got off the ground.”

HOLYOKE Gateway City Arts, closed since July due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cannot go on and is for sale, its owners announced Friday.
Gateway City is a sprawling complex on Race Street with two performance spaces, galleries, workshops, offices and restaurants: Judd’s, The Bistro and Race Street Tacos. Its development over the past decade has been seen as a sign of rebirth in the city’s canal district.
“Really we would like to find someone who would like to run it as is,” Vitek Kruta, who owns Gateway City with Lori Divine, said Friday Kruta in a phone interview. “Whether it is another entertainment company or a group of people or a co-op of some sort.”
