Chennai: Several parts of the city have since Monday received moderate to heavy rainfall which is usually unlikely in January. The rainfall also took place in the surrounding areas of Chennai. According to the weather department, this rainfall is expected to last till Wednesday.
Highest rainfall in 100 years
The Tamil Nadu weatherman also said that this is the highest amount of rainfall that the city has experienced in the last 100 years. In 15 hours between Monday and Tuesday, Chennai received 145 mm rainfall.

CHENNAI: With the Northeast monsoon yet to withdraw, several parts of the State are witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall, which is unusual in January. Chennai and its surroundings, in particular, have received non-stop rainfall since Monday night. The Met office said this will continue till Wednesday.
This is among the highest rainfall the city has experienced in the last 100 years, said ‘Tamil Nadu Weatherman’ Pradeep John on his blog. The city received 145 mm of rainfall in a 15-hour window between Monday and Tuesday. In the 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday, 83 mm is expected.
Chennai has recorded heaviest rainfall of January since the beginning of 21st century. While airport observatory Meenambakkam recorded a deluge of 126.2mm, the regional observation centre at Nungambakkam piled up 84.8mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. Moderate spells are expected today and again for Chennai on 9th January taking the monthly total beyond 200mm and inching closer to the mark of an all-time high.

Rain over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is expected to continue till January 10. However, it may not be as heavy as it was over the past two days, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Noting that easterly waves impacted wet weather over the State, officials said very heavy rainfall lashed some places, particularly Chennai’s suburbs, on Tuesday.
