Responding to the latest monthly NHS performance statistics from NHS England and NHS Improvement, Nuffield Trust Deputy Director of Research Dr Sarah Scobie said:
Four in 10 deaths in England and Wales were caused by Covid-19 in the week ending January 15, ONS figures show as UK passes awful toll of 100,000 fatalities since the pandemic began
Data from Office for National Statistics today revealed as of January 15 there had been 103,704 Covid deaths
In the most recent week, four out of 10 people who died of any cause had Covid-19 on their death certificate
Figure is slightly lower than Department of Health s tally of 98,531 because the ONS looks at death certificates
Only four countries, US (421,129), Brazil (217,664), India (153,587) and Mexico (150,273), suffered more deaths
