DENVER â On one of the hottest days of the year, most kids are splashing around in the pool. For those in summer programs, some are in classrooms without air conditioning.
Hours before the kids get to Ellis Elementary School, Andrew Maestas, the facility manager, is hard at work. First thing I do in the morning is open up the windows, Maestas said.
Denver Public Schools started their summer programs a couple of weeks ago. Eight of the 50 programs are in buildings without AC. Ellis Elementary is one of them.

Round Lake Unit District 116 will offer a hybrid summer learning program focusing on math and literacy for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The optional program will run June 7-30, according to the District 116 website. There is no cost to enroll, and busing will be provided from the student s school to Ellis Elementary School. Monday and Tuesday classes will by in person from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Ellis, and students will attend classes remotely during the same hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
That figure will soon increase.
Gov. JB Pritzker announced Wednesday the 28,000-student school district can look forward to receiving $220 million thanks to President Joe Biden s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan signed into law in March to aid the nation in the recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prtizker, who made the announcement in the Ellis Elementary School gymnasium, praised Rockford Public Schools for offering families of students from pre-K to 12th grade a choice between in-person and remote-only instruction since the first day of the school year. But still, we re all wondering if this was a lost year for many children, he said. We worry about how living through this pandemic will impact their future.
