Adur Homes, the council’s social housing arm, owns and manages more than 2,500 properties. An area in need of investment is the Southwick Estate between the railway station and Shoreham Port, consisting of 248 homes across 15 blocks, 13 of which are owned by Adur Homes and two are commercial properties owned by others. These are split into 70 per cent tenants and 30 per cent leaseholders. Improvements were due to take place on the estate last year but were halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This has provided the opportunity for Adur Homes to review the entire estate and look at a range of future options.

Councillor Neil Parkin said: “Let’s hope it all happens. It’s all very dependent on people not being silly and the numbers continuing to drop.
“But it’s looking promising.
“It should mean it’s a pretty good August.”
He said it the timescale revealed yesterday would be useful for businesses.
“They can plan ahead – rather than a week’s notice or two week’s notice,” he said.
And while he described the reopening plan as ‘cautious’, he said this was better than moving too quickly.
“If you need questions answered, you need to either speak to the senior officers or somebody beforehand.”
He was within his constitutional rights to do so but it is very unusual for a council leader not to step up to the bat when questions are asked.
As with all councils across the country, there are difficult times ahead for Adur.
The 2021/22 budget gap has widened from the £410,000 predicted in July to £485,000 and the shortfall is expected to stand at £1.8m in 2025/26.
Despite this, a report to the council said it was ‘well-positioned’ to set a balanced budget next year – something it is legally required to do.
