The PN leader named the Office of the Ombudsman and the Standards Commissioner’s office as examples of how more work needs to be done to ensure institutions are working correctly. He also mentioned the court proceedings against former Office of the Prime Minister Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Nexia BT officials. “They were charged not because police investigated, but because the magistrate ordered it.”

‘Cannabis Does, In Fact, Harm’: PN Leader Says Reform Must Reference ‘Harmful’ Aspects  Share: PN’s proposals on the government’s cannabis reform will “keep in mind the harmful aspect” of using the substance, leader Bernard Grech has revealed. “Cannabis does, in fact, harm. I understand that thousands use cannabis, and I agree that no one should go to prison for doing so. Still, we should not send the message that cannabis is harmless,” he said in an interview with The Malta Independent’s Neil Camilleri. The government has launched a white paper on the proposed reform, which will allow each household to grow up to four cannabis plants, decriminalise possession of under 7 grams and under 23 grams, and establish a dedicated cannabis authority.

Institutions must work autonomously in order to function

Opposition leader Bernard Grech on Sunday reiterated his vow to “take difficult decisions” to renew his party. Speaking in an interview with the editor of The Malta Independent Neil Camilleri, Grech spoke about the party’s attempts at overcoming the gap with the incumbent Labour government, arguing that PN must “learn from its past mistakes”. Grech maintained that the party’s structures are working in teams, or “clusters”, to provide a fresh set of proposals for the electorate and to embrace consultation with as many stakeholders as possible as part of its renewal efforts. “We must change ourselves first to provide people with reasons to come back to the party. It is the lesson we must learn from the voters who sent us back to the drawing board over the past two elections,” the leader of the opposition said.

Times of Malta assistant editor Matthew Xuereb appointed IĠM president

Veteran journalist and Times of Malta assistant editor Matthew Xuereb has been appointed president of the Institute of Maltese Journalists. Xuereb replaces former president Sylvana Debono, who is moving on from journalism.  He is one of two new faces on the institute’s council. MaltaToday online editor and fellow journalism veteran Kurt Sansone has also been co-opted onto the IĠM council as its new general secretary, replacing former TVM journalist Nigel Mifsud who will also be leaving the profession.
