Over the weekend, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded his tour to five countries in Africa, upholding a 30-plus year tradition of China’s top diplomat starting the new year with the first international visit to the continent. The trip brought Wang to a disparate group of destinations: Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Tanzania, and Seychelles.

The World Health Organization’s COVAX program aims to help developing countries secure vaccines. However, the program will only cover the most vulnerable 20 percent of each country’s population. Assuming that each vaccine requires the administration of two doses, Africa, with a population of over 1.3 billion people, will need at least 1.6 billion doses to meet its 60 percent vaccination target. Africa CDC after accounting for COVAX’s contribution will need to secure 1.28 billion more doses at an estimated cost of $13.54 billion to close the remaining gap. More vaccines may be needed, however, as some will inevitably spoil during transport Africa’s heat, rainy seasons, and poor road infrastructure provide logistical barriers to distribution.

With plenty of attention on Cheetah since she’s a focus in the new Wonder Woman: 1984 film, the timing of this issue is nice as we get more comic goodness of the character. Christos Gage is a writer that I’ve enjoyed a number of projects from and he delves into things well here but also goes the distance in providing answers and solutions, albeit from a top-level view, instead of just simple platitudes. That’s hard to do in comics and it’s really appreciated. With this story, he’s paired with Neil Edwards for the art duties and it’s definitely a good match. Tony Blair has called for people to be given just one Covid-19 vaccine dose to speed up roll out

SIR – Hearing Tony Blair on Radio 4 yesterday recommending that the over-80s are not given their second vaccinations made me hugely thankful that he is not prime minister anymore.

SIR – Mr Blair suggests that, rather than keeping back half the current supply of vaccine in order to give people a second dose, it should all be used to give more people a first dose. He thinks this will still provide some protection.
