The recent Queen’s Speech at the start of a new parliamentary session included a number of serious threats to our British democracy and way of life. Firstly, the Conservative Government plans to make photographic ID compulsory for future elections. This is not because personation has been a problem in the past; on the contrary, almost nobody has been convicted of it in decades. No; the intention is simply for this to disadvantage electors who might not vote Conservative. I salute our Witham hero, Neil Coughlan, who has been valiantly defending our rights in this matter in the courts. Secondly, the Tories plan to change the voting arrangements for metro mayors, making them a first-past-the-post system. This is because, in their opinion, too many Labour candidates are winning such elections.
