What is bottom trawling?
Bottom trawling is an industrial fishing method where a huge net with heavy weights is dragged along the sea bed, scooping up everything in its path.
Huge is something of an understatement. As ‘Seaspiracy’ says, “the largest trawl nets are so big that they can swallow whole cathedrals or up to thirteen jumbo jets.”
How does bottom trawling contribute to global warming?
This year saw the publishing of the first-ever study to calculate the carbon cost of bottom trawling. ‘Protecting the global ocean for biodiversity, food and climate’ found that bottom trawling releases as much CO2 as the entire aviation industry.
The recently launched Liontrust ESG Trust (ESGT) has confirmed its full board of directors and published its Prospectus, which includes a timetable for shareholders.
Board line-up
In the latest announcement, Liontrust has named Richard Laing as chair of the board and three other directors, including two women.
Laing is on the board of Tritax Big Box Reit, Leeds Castle Foundation and JP Morgan Emerging Markets Investment Trust, and also chairs 3i Infrastructure.
Clare Brook and Kunle Olafare join the board as non-executive directors, while Sarah Ing takes the position of chair of the audit and risk committee.
Brook is chief executive of the Blue Marine Foundation, an ocean conservation NGO, and has a 24-year career in sustainable investing including stints at Jupiter, NPI and Henderson. In 2001, she established the sustainable investment division of Aviva where she and her team launched the sustainable future range of funds, now managed by Liontrust through acquisition.
