A series of American sanctions on a Macau underworld kingpin helped Kuala Lumpur pry the lid off a Malaysian connection to criminal groups in China and related police corruption in the Southeast Asian nation, a senior police official told BenarNews.
Sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department allowed the Royal Malaysia Police to connect the dots, which led to the uncovering of the Nicky Gang allegedly headed by Nicky Liow Soon Hee, Johor state police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said.
“It was crucial information, as based on the tip of the iceberg we were able to study the serious and extensive operations of the local syndicate, which has international connections,” Ayob told BenarNews., an RFA-affiliated online news service.

JOHOR BARU, April 22 An Interpol Red Notice has been issued to locate and arrest fugitive businessman Datuk Seri Nicky Liow Soon Hee and his Chinese national wife, said Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay today.
The Johor police chief said the Red Notice for Liow was granted last Tuesday (April 20) while the one for his wife New Tze was issued yesterday.
“Both have been served with the Interpol’s Red Notice,” he said at the Johor police contingent headquarters today.
The Red Notice refers to the request to locate and detain a person of interest.
Previously, Deputy Inspector-General Of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said that Bukit Aman had already requested an Interpol Blue Notice to locate, identify or collect information on Liow.
The Blue Notice refers to the request to locate, identify or collect information on a person of interest.
The Johor police chief said police still believe that Liow is in Malaysia. However, we are widening our search for this wanted suspect via Interpol Blue and Red Notices. If he is still in Malaysia, we believe we can still detain him, he told reporters after presenting a donation to Nor Fazlena Afizal, whose daughter is diagnosed with eye cancer at Hospital Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (April 15).
JOHOR BARU: All policemen suspected to be linked to fugitive Datuk Seri Nicky Liow will be hauled up to face charges in court, said state police chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
Johor police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests of enforcement officers following the announcement that 34 individuals, including members of the police force, were said to be linked to Liow, he said.
He added that Johor police are focused on charging police officers involved in organised crime activities, including crime syndicates believed to be led by the fugitive businessman, rather than handing over their names to the police’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS).
