Graduate students help train Georgia Southern University Police on communication disorders | Newsroom

Graduate students help train Georgia Southern University Police on communication disorders July 13, 2021 Officers in the Georgia Southern University Police Department (UPD) now have more options for improving police interactions with individuals impacted by communication disorders thanks to graduate students in the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDS) program in the Waters College of Health Professions.  Nine students led 12 officers and one UPD support staff through training at the RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah.  “In addition to working with law enforcement, students gained valuable insight on how to prepare their future clients to interact successfully with law enforcement,” said Tory Candea, SLPD, clinic coordinator at the RiteCare Center.

Edward Waters University becomes a reality, transitions from college

Alesha Jones-Seabrooks remembers being a young girl growing up in Jacksonville. Along with her classmates at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, she d throw wads of crumpled paper out her school bus window on the drive past Edward Waters College on Kings Road to her mother s Washington Heights apartment.  One day, in an effort to keep the kids in line, a police officer spoke to the group of paper-throwers.  Be careful, you may become the queen of that college one day, Jones-Seabrooks recalls the officer telling her. She wrote it off, convinced she d attend an arts college in Hollywood. By 1994, that prophecy came true.
