UK’s Tougher Sentencing for ‘County Lines’ Drug Dealers Will Not Help Catch the Right People: Criminologist
The UK’s county lines drug dealers are to face tougher sentences under new rules published on Wednesday that add extra penalties for offending involving “aggravating factors” like the exploitation of children and other vulnerable people.
County lines gangs are so-called because of their practice of taking advantage of children and others to run drugs and cash across police and local authority boundaries so that they themselves can avoid detection by law enforcement.
The gangs are also known for “cuckooing,” meaning they will take over the property perhaps of someone who has addiction issues or mental health problems from where they will conduct their drug dealing activities.

A stepfather was sentenced to 10 months in prison on Tuesday for secretly filming his stepdaughter while in the bath for a duration of three years. Thomas Craig Lewis, 35, and his covert recordings only came to light after his stepdaughter spotted his phone above the bathroom door on the eve of her 18th birthday.
Lauren Brightwood said she had always looked up to Lewis as a father since he came to be part of her life at the young age of four. But in the past three years, Lewis had begun to secretly record the young girl when she turned 14.
Ms Brightwood spotted Lewis camera at the bathroom window in 2018, Wales Online reported today.
She said: I went into a state of shock, I didn t really know how to process it. This is not something that people normally have to deal with and I didn t know what to do.
I am anxious when entering bathrooms as I don t want something to happen to me again. I don t think this is fair. Craig is not my biological dad but I treated him like once since age four.
