Commissioners OK Robertson County to house excess inmates

BELTON — As the county’s jail population continued to rise, the Bell County Commissioners Court once voted to contract out more space in other counties. Robertson County is the latest county to work with Bell County, allowing the use of jail space to house excess inmates. The county currently works with six other counties to house excess inmates. The other counties the local jail works with now includes Robertson, Milam, Burnett, Limestone, Williamson, McLennan and Comal counties. Shane Sowell, Bell County’s jail administrator, said the county had 1,223 inmates in its system as of Monday morning. This included the 241 inmates housed outside of the county’s facilities around the state.

Active Bell COVID-19 cases rise by 95; incidence rate highest since late February

Along with rising hospitalizations due to COVID-19, the Bell County Health District reported a rise of 95 new cases Thursday. The county now has 643 active reported cases of the virus — a sharp rise over Wednesday’s 548 active cases. Officials did not report any new deaths due to the virus, which remain at 470. The incidence rate for the virus is the highest the county has seen since late February — currently at 177.2 cases per 100,000 people. The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting that the rise in cases statewide can be attributed to the delta variant of the virus, which accounts for most new infections.

Bell County to search for new elections administrator

As local elections near this year, Bell County is once again searching for a new elections administrator. At their weekly meeting Tuesday, Commissioners unanimously approved an agreement with SGR Executive Recruitment Services to search for a new elections administrator for the county. The agreement comes as the current administrator Matthew Dutton told officials of his wish to return to his former job as the assistant administrator. Commissioners set an amount not to exceed $24,900 for the organization’s services. County Judge David Blackburn said that the Bell County Elections Commission, which chooses the elections administrator, decided to go with a professional company for the search this time. He said the use of this firm is different from the normal procedure of posting the job that the county normally does.
